When building a new home or remodeling an older one, you might not think that a roof would come with a list of options, but there are several to consider beside the obvious color choice.

Type of shingle is a starting point. Three-tab shingles are the traditional shingle one would see on older roofs. The life spans of these shingles is about 10 years less than a dimensional, also called architectural, shingle (what you typically see on newer roofs). Also, dimensional shingles are rated for higher winds. While about $20/100 square feet more, the extra life and durability more than pays for itself. Also, the dimensional shingle provides a more updated look to your home giving it higher resale value

Attic ventilation is a point to consider. 10 years ago the standard was to put a powered attic fan near the peak (ridge) of the roof. Now there is an option that can accomplish the same thing and eliminate the electric bill. Ridge vent runs the full length of the ridge line and passively allows hot air to move up and out through a screen that prevents bugs from entering your attic.
