This was the title of an article in Southwest Airlines “Spirit” magazine. It was a story about teens in LA who play in the orchestra and are helping to teach/mentor younger kids with learning to play instruments.

I love learning! I know that new information, techniques, ways of doing things, and products are out there and I want to learn every one and implement the best of them!

However, it doesn’t take a genius to become that source of information. When I was a member of the local fire department we had a saying that we actively used to teach the new recruits, “watch one, do one, teach one.” The way it played out was that the person teaching you had recently learned a skill and was being overseen by someone who had mastered the skill, and several of them were being overseen by someone who knew even more (or maybe had even developed the skill 30 years ago…).

In the world of Highpoint, my learning may be as simple as asking a supplier a question when I’m ordering materials, “Pat, we are about to do xyz and we have always done it this way. Do you carry any products that do the same thing better or are easier to work with that could save us time, money, or give us a better finished product?”

The next step is for me to pass what I have learned onto team members, sub-contractors, and the owner of the project. Don’t hesitate to ask us questions! Answering them or digging to find the answers are one of the best parts of my job and a service I hope to offer all my customers …
